KABOOM
Superflat: A Post–War
Japanese Art Movement
The term 'superflat' was created by the artist Takashi Murakami to describe his art that is heavily inspired by the anime style. Superflat references Japan's 2-D art such as anime and manga, but it also represents the shallowness of Japan's consumer culture. Superflat ties in the tradition of bright colors planes and playful cartoons to the dark aspect of Japan's history where the bombings have "flattened Japan." Superflat is a response to Japan's obsession with consumerism and envy towards the countries who won in the war and were able to enjoy this world of consumer culture.
Kaboom is a conceptual exhibition that is held at the MOCA showcasing the history and concept behind Superflat. Kaboom will feature other artists that use the term superflat to describe their work. Kaboom is kept flat and 2-D, filled with overly saturated, bright colors to reference the saturated consumer culture of Japan. Kaboom will uncover the dark side of Japan's superficial consumer culture that Murakami speaks of as well as celebrate the art created in reaction to it.
